Once in a while I get a hankering for pulled or chopped pork barbecue. Today I happened to be in Greensboro and stopped by the mothership– Stamey’s Barbecue on Gate City Blvd.

Stamey’s was founded in 1930 and specializes in Lexington style pit cooked barbecue. They use hardwood hickory coals to cook with. The Gate City Blvd location (formerly High Point Road) was opened in 1953 across from the First Horizon Coliseum. It is still family owned to this day. Founder Warner Stamey was inducted into the Barbecue Hall of Fame in 2020.

I ordered my usual 2 chopped pork sandwiches and a side of fries. I had Cheerwine to wash it down with. The only NC product I did not use was Texas Pete, only because Stamey’s makes their own in house hot sauce. Sandwiches usually come with the vinegar based slaw, but I don’t personally care for it and opt to leave it off. It can overpower the pork flavor.

You can get sandwiches or plates. You can get your pork sliced if you don’t like the chopped version. They also have chicken and hot dogs. If you are on a diet, you can get a garden salad– maybe with some pork barbecue on it. Dessert includes cobbler and ice cream. Believe it or not, they even roast their own coffee beans.

Get your ‘cue on today by visiting Stamey’s either at the original or on Battleground Ave.
